Welcome to your first ICT 8 class! This course is all about developing essential digital skills that will help you succeed in school and beyond. Today, we’ll set up your tools and get ready for a strong start.

1) Class Expectations & Course Outline

We’ll go over how the course works, where to save your work, and how to find lessons online. You’ll also review the Digital Citizenship Agreement that explains responsible device use.

Talking points
  • Where to find lessons, downloads, and due dates
  • How to submit: Teams → Assignments → Upload from OneDrive
  • File naming: AssignmentName_Name.ext
  • Respectful, inclusive communication (in person and online)
  • Phones away, food-free lab, tidy workspace

2) Send Your First Professional Email

Write a short, polite email to your teacher. This is your first practice in digital communication and helps you make a strong first impression.

Checklist

  • Subject line: ICT 8 – First Email
  • Greeting (Hi Ms. Ahoy,)
  • 3–5 sentences introducing yourself (interests, pronouns, favourite hobby)
  • Share one goal for this course
  • Closing + your full name

Example

Subject: ICT 8 – First Email

Hi Ms. Ahoy,

I'm <Your Name> and my pronouns are <pronouns>.
One of my interests is <interest>.
One goal I have for this course is <goal>.

3) Join Our Microsoft Teams Class

Objective: Make sure you are connected to the class for assignments, announcements, and chat.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click Join or Create a Team.
  3. Enter the join code given in class, then click Join.
  4. Go to the General channel, find the Welcome post, click Like ❤️, and then click the Class Website link in that post.
  5. Pin the class channel to the top for quick access.

4) Start Typing Practice

Objective: Build speed and accuracy using TypingClub.

  1. Go to TypingClub.
  2. Sign in using your school email; first name and last initial; and don't forget your password!
  3. Start with the placement test.
  4. Start typing for the rest of the class.
  5. You will start with typing at the begining of each class.

Tip: Use correct finger placement — accuracy first, then speed!

Checklist - What you should have done today...

  1. Email: Send your professional email to your teacher.
  2. Teams: Joined the class Team and "liked" the Welcome post
  3. ICT 8 Website: Navigated to the class website using the link on Teams
  4. Typing: Complete the first TypingClub lessons.
